Why Scent.
Scent is the only sense with a direct line to memory and emotion. It bypasses the rational mind entirely and lands somewhere older and more instinctive. A smell doesn't remind you of a moment the way a photograph does. It puts you back inside it.
That's not a poetic idea. It's how the brain actually works.
Because scent is the medium we chose to build around, what goes into our candles matters more than it might in another product. We're not filling a jar with wax and calling it a day. We're creating something designed to hold a feeling, to be returned to, to do something real when you light it. That requires ingredients we can stand behind completely.

I have always been sensitive to what I put in my body, what I breathe, what I bring into my home. Living in Switzerland clarified something I had sensed for a long time — the air, the food, the ingredients on labels were all different. Moving back to the US, I noticed the gap immediately and became more deliberate about everything I chose.
So when I started Alt Route, clean ingredients were never a question. Natural wax because it burns cleaner. Fragrance oils formulated to the strictest standards available, enhanced with essential oil components, because the air in your home matters. I chose what I could stand behind completely — for myself and for anyone who lights one of these candles.
WICKS: Our candles use cotton wicks, selected specifically for each vessel and wax blend. Wick sizing affects everything -- the size of the flame, the rate of burn, the depth of the melt pool. A wick that is too large burns hot and fast. Too small and the candle tunnels, leaving wax on the sides and weakening the scent throw. We test each combination until the burn behaves exactly as it should, because a candle made with premium ingredients deserves a wick chosen with the same care.
WAX: Our candles are made with a proprietary blend of three waxes, chosen together for how they perform, not for how they sound on a label. The result is a burn that is clean, even, and long-lasting, with a scent throw that feels present without being overwhelming.
Coconut Wax
Slow-burning, clean, and sustainably sourced. Creates a smooth, even melt pool and excellent scent throw. Burns cooler and longer than many alternatives, which matters when the candle is meant to be lived with over time.
Soy Wax
Renewable and biodegradable. Anchors the blend, providing consistent performance and a long, even burn. Its lower melting point helps the candle release fragrance steadily from the first burn.
Apricot Wax
The quieter addition. Softens the blend and lends a gentle luminosity to both the flame and the finish. Less common in candle making and more expensive to source, but it gives our candles a quality that a two-wax blend simply doesn't achieve.
FRAGRANCE: We source fragrance oils that are formulated with a blend of fragrance and essential oil components, meeting the strictest clean fragrance standards available. Every oil is free of phthalates, parabens, carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins, and acute toxins. Nothing on the hazard list. Nothing we can't account for. Fragrance is where many candle brands cut corners. We don't, because the scent is the entire point.
What We Don't Use.
No paraffin. No synthetic dyes. No phthalates. No parabens. No restricted fragrance materials. Nothing we wouldn't be comfortable explaining to anyone who asked.
The OBSESSIVE DETAILS.
Every candle is hand-poured in Easton, Pennsylvania in small batches. Wicks are tested obsessively across multiple burn cycles before a scent is approved, because a candle that tunnels or drowns its wick is a candle that doesn't do its job. Packaging is chosen for minimal waste. Our ceramic vessels are chosen for their second life — wash them out and they become a planter, a storage vessel, a jewelry dish. The loop continues. We are a small operation by design. Not because we lack ambition but because quality at scale requires proving quality first.
